Teenage football fan\, Terez\, blacklisted on account of her sister’s prominent role in the ‘uprising’\, is desperate to get a life. But\, after Terez battles to secure a job in the canteen kitchen\, she finds herself caught up in web of conflicting loyalties. And secrets. \nThe roles\nKLÁRA FODOR (KLARI): Female. Has an intermittent cough characteristic of asthma.  \nALÍZ BAKO: Female. The factory chief cook. In her late thirties with peroxide blond hair. \nTEREZ KOVÁCS (TERI): Female. The new kitchen assistant. In her late teens. Sporty. \nISTVÁN FARKAS (PISTI): Male. A factory foreman\, and the works social club secretary. Mid to late twenties. Fanatical about football. Used to be in the Hungarian youth team. \nAbout the writer\nJacqueline lives in Yorkshire and writes plays\, poetry\, and historical novels (The Road to Waterloo\, The Road to Peterloo). She is currently working on her third novel\, The Road to Ruin\, whilst continuing to write plays. She has had various script in hand performances whilst her drama Trespass was shown on the Northern TV networks in 1997. An extract from Got to Hide Your Love Away won Script Yorkshire’s 25th anniversary competition and the full length play was ‘long listed’ for the Bush script reading scheme. This event is the first read through of the subsequently revised version.

SUMMARY:Loot
DESCRIPTION:By Joe Orton\nDirected by Katie Leckey \n“Has anybody ever hidden money in a coffin?” \nYork Settlement Community Players are proud to present Joe Orton’s Loot. A masterfully scandalous\, free-wheeling and ferocious farce about life’s ultimate taboo…death. \nContent guidance\nJoe Orton wrote Loot in 1965\, and the script is deliberately controversial and thought-provoking – tackling some very dark themes and including satirical attitudes on the Roman Catholic Church\, the police force and how society views death. The YCSP production stays largely close to the original script and as such has an age guidance of 16+. The show contains adult themes and offensive language (including sexism and xenophobia). There are also sexual references and references to sexual assault (including rape and necrophilia) and references to smoking on stage. \nPerformances\nJoin us at the York Theatre Royal Studio. \n\nTuesday 18 Feb\, 19:45\nWednesday 19 Feb\, 19:45\nThursday 20 Feb\, 19:45\nFriday 21 Feb\, 19:45\nSaturday 22 Feb\, 14:00 & 19:45\nMonday 24 Feb\, 19:45\nTuesday 25 Feb\, 19:45\nWednesday 26 Feb\, 19:45\nThursday 27 Feb\, 19:45\n\nBook online. \nCast\n\n\nMrs McLeavy – Caroline Greenwood\n\n\nMr McLeavy – Paul French\n\n\nFay – Emily Carhart\n\n\nHal – Jack Mackay\n\n\nDennis – Miles John\n\n\nMeadows – Emily Hansen\n\n\nTruscott – Stuart Green\n\n\nEdith the Church Organist – Helen Clarke\n\n\nSister Barbara – Xandra Logan\n\n\nPriest – James Wood\n\n\nSergeant Timothy Carruthers – Chris Meadley\n\n\nMrs Edna Welthorpe – Victoria Delaney\n\n\nKeith Kevin O’Keefe – Serafina Coupe

SUMMARY:Party Piece by Richard Harris
DESCRIPTION:Michael and Roma are meticulously preparing for their fancy dress housewarming party. Roma is treating the event like the coronation of the newest monarch\, with Michael thinking he is planning the Normandy landing\, as well as manning the barbeque with 5-star determination and the personality of Gordon Ramsey. \nMrs Hinson – who is not the biggest fans of her upper-class new neighbours – keeps a watchful and criticising eye on the attendees with the evening looking to be the social event of the neighbourhood. \nThat is until a series of hilarious disasters strike\, including an embarrassing lack of guests\, a burning barbeque\, a marauding Zimmer frame\, and a corpse showing up at the front door\, turning the party into a hilarious misadventure! \nDirected by Martin T. Brooks

SUMMARY:Underdog: The Other Other Brontë by Sarah Gordon
DESCRIPTION:Charlotte Brontë has a confession about how one sister became an idol\, and the other became known as the third sister. You know the one. No\, not that one. The other\, other one… Anne. \nYork Settlement Community Players present Sarah Gordon’s new and exciting play\, which premiered at The National Theatre in 2024. Underdog is an irreverent retelling of the life and legend of the Brontë sisters like you’ve never seen them before! \nThis is not a story about well-behaved women. This is a story about the power of words. It’s about sisters and sisterhood\, love and jealousy\, support and competition. \nAn Amateur production presented by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd. \nAge guidance: 12+. The production contains some explicit language\, themes of grief/death and addiction. It includes a depiction of attempted suicide.
