SUMMARY:Auditions: Separate Tables
DESCRIPTION:7-17 February 2024 (10 performances)\nYork Theatre Royal Studio\nDirected by Helen Wilson \nAbout the play\nWritten in 1954\, Separate Tables by Terence Rattigan are two linked one-act plays set in a shabby hotel on the south coast of England. Miss Cooper\, the owner\, looks after several rather mature permanent residents\, as well as more colourful less permanent ones with scandalous secrets. This is an England where class is paramount\, but the 1960s and the freedom this decade brought are just around the corner. All guests eat on separate tables\, hence the title. \nSeparate Tables was censored in its day from Rattigan’s original. This play of tension\, repression and reticence is a classic and a great opportunity for actors. \nRoles (any ages listed are rough guides)\n\nMabel: waitress (comic potential)\nLady Matheson: aristocrat in hard times (mature)\nMrs Railton-Bell: mature snob \nMiss Meacham: Mature eccentric bohemian\nMr Fowler: Former school master (mysterious)\nMr Malcolm: Journalist/former Labour party MP (40ish)\nMrs Shankland: Glamorous aristocrat\, 30s-40\nMiss Cooper: Hotel owner\, 40s \nCharles Stratton: Medical student\nJean Tanner: Art student\nMajor Pollock: Mature army type\nMiss Railton Bell: Sweet sensitive young girl\n\nThere are opportunities for doubling so ideally we’re looking to cast 10 actors. \nAudition information\nAuditions will take place on: \n\nWednesday 8 November\, 7pm – 9pm (Southlands Methodist Church)\nSaturday 11 November\, 10am – 1pm (Southlands Methodist Church)\nSunday 12 November\, 2pm – 5pm (Southlands Methodist Church)\n\nAuditions will be separate and last for 15 minutes. You will get a script to read and explore with Helen\, the director. Please come to your audition with a knowledge of the play (it is widely available and can be found online). \nTo register your interest\, please fill in this form (https://forms.gle/M24YbU4nUVgfBw1d6) and we’ll get back to you with a 15 minute audition slot. SUMMARY:Auditions: Government Inspector
DESCRIPTION:Calling all actors\, musicians\, singers\, performers! \nWe are delighted to announce our Autumn 2023 production at Theatre@41\, Monkgate will be Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol in a version by David Harrower\, directed by Alan Park. \nThe play is a true ensemble piece with roles of all sizes for at least 12 performers\, possibly more. This means there are opportunities for every member of the York Settlement Community Players\, whether you want to be front and centre\, a little to the side or an enthusiastic dot in the distance. \nTo help you out we’ve detailed some of the more main roles below. We’ll be holding workshops at Clementhorpe Community Centre on Wednesday 28 June and Wednesday 12 July\, and at Theatre@41 on Sunday 2 July. Our auditions are open to all\, regardless of whether you’re a YSCP member or have acted in one of our productions before. \nAbout the play\n“It’s not good\, gentlemen. That’s why I’ve gathered you all here. An Inspector is coming… a Government Inspector!” \nThe Mayor is in a cold sweat. News has reached him of an imminent visit from a Government Inspector. His fear is well-founded as he has been somewhat lacking in his official duties. The hospital’s a health hazard\, the school’s a war zone\, the soldiers don’t have trousers to march in and he never quite got around to building that church! \nSurely the only possible solution is bribery; it seems to have resolved many a sticky situation for the Mayor and his team in the past! But a simple case of mistaken identity leads matters to spiral hysterically out of control. Could it be that they have met their match in the complicated business of deception? \nGogol’s satirical masterpiece is a hilarious riot of corruption\, lies and greed that has lost none of its original bite. \nCharacters\nUnless specified roles can be any age\, any gender\, any natural accent. All must be played larger than life. \n\nThe Mayor (Male) – Corrupt. Idiotic. Thinks he’s in control. As the play goes on he is pushed to the extremist of extremes as he tries to cling to power in his small provincial town. He will stop at nothing\, double cross everyone\, to emerge on top. Along with Khlestakov this is one of the pivotal roles in the play and comes with a significant number of lines to learn and scenes to perform. \nKhlestakov (Male)– A terrible person. Self-proclaimed poet. A harmless coward in reality. He has no natural abilities\, no job and no plan as he lurches and cheats his way through life. But as he is mistaken for the Government Inspector he inadvertently finds he is able to take full advantage of the situation. Along with the Mayor\, this is one of the pivotal roles of the play and comes with a significant number of lines to learn and scenes to perform. \nOsip – Khlestakov’s long suffering (and hungry) servant. Complains a lot\, not clear why they stick around but like their master they are able to turn a situation to their advantage. A main role with one large opening speech then dialogue.\nAnna (Female) – The Mayor’s wife. Dressed to impress but with poor taste\, she enjoys the trappings of high society with no idea how to behave accordingly. An idiotic snob who is intoxicated by status. A main role with reasonable number of lines.\nMaria (Female) – The Mayor’s daughter. Younger but more intelligent than both her parents put together. Sees things\, and people for what they are (unless they have a moustache). A main role but not too many lines. \nDobchinsky and Bobchinsky – Double act\, easily confused for one another. Finish each other’s sentences\, know each other intimately. The Mayor’s go-fors and inevitably end up reporting to others what others said/ didn’t say. Main roles but not too many lines.\nThe town functionaries – The corrupt functionaries of the town. Happy to offer bribes to maintain their status\, and all with their own distinct character traits. These are large ensemble roles\, in and out of the action throughout the play. \n\nThe Judge\, (Lyapkin-Tyapkin) – loves dogs\, and will happily find in your favour for one\nSchool superintendent (Khlopov) – terrified of teachers\nHead of hospitals (Zemlyanika) – runs a hospital with no patients\nPostmaster – Reads everyone’s mail. Knows everything. Often gets the wrong end of the stick. And it’s all really their fault.\nPolice superintendent – incompetent \nThe Doctor – cannot speak\, but goes to great lengths to get his silent point across. \n\n\n\n\nThe rest – There’s the police force\, a locksmith’s wife\, servants\, shopkeepers\, inn keepers\, waiters. All wild and wonderful characters and cameos. Some with lines\, some without. All make an impact.\n\nUnless specified in the character breakdowns above\, please use your own accent or an extreme version of it. But no need for Russian. \nAbout the director\nAlan Park has performed in several plays in York\, including most recently YSCP’s The Real Thing. He is also the chair of Theatre@41. In another life he worked as an actor\, specialising in ensemble physical theatre storytelling. Alan is looking forward to creating a true community production where everyone gets to have fun on stage and a bit of a play with some like minded folk. \nAudition information\nAuditions will take place at: \n\nClementhorpe Community Centre (Lower Ebor St\, York YO23 1AY) on Wednesday 28 June\, 6:30pm to 9:30pm\nTheatre@41 (41 Monkgate\, York\, YO31 7PB) on Sunday 2 July 10:00am to 1:00pm\nClementhorpe Community Centre (Lower Ebor St\, York YO23 1AY) on Wednesday 12 July\, 6:30pm to 9:30pm\n\nYou do not need to prepare a monologue. The auditions will be run like a workshop/ rehearsal where everyone has some fun\, gets to know each other then we perform some scenes and swap in and out. Scenes will be available in advance and everyone will get a chance to read for a part they want to read for. \nTo register your interest\, please fill in this form (https://forms.gle/dpW8X6KtY82a9hAT7). If you have any questions\, please don’t hesitate to drop us an email at yorksettlementcommunityplayers@gmail.com. If you are successful in auditioning\, please note that you will be required to join YSCP – annual membership is £15. \nRehearsals and performances\nThere will be a read through (get to know you session) at the end of July. Then rehearsals will run from the end of August 2023\, an average of twice during weekday evenings and one daytime on the weekend. There will be 6 performances at Theatre@41. The production week is Sunday 22 October to Saturday 28 October. You will need to join York Settlement Community Players in order to be part of the cast. \nDue to the vast range of size and type of role we can try and accommodate holidays/other shows etc for the ensemble parts. Please chat to us about this.  \nWe look forward to hearing from you!

SUMMARY:Auditions: The Real Thing
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce our Easter 2023 production in the York Theatre Royal Studio will be Tom Stoppard’s brilliantly witty play\, The Real Thing\, directed by Jacob Ward. There are seven fantastic roles up for grabs and we’ll be holding auditions at Southlands Methodist Church on 1\, 3 and 4 December. Our auditions are open to all\, regardless of whether you’re a YSCP member or have acted in one of our productions before. \nAbout the play\nHenry is married to Charlotte. Max is married to Annie. Henry – possibly the sharpest playwright of his generation – has written a play about a couple whose marriage is on the brink of collapse. Charlotte and Max\, his leading couple\, are about to find out that sometimes life imitates art… \nHilarious and thought-provoking\, this thrilling exploration of love and infidelity has many twists and turns. With sharp\, quick-witted dialogue and seven brilliantly formed characters\, the relationships in this play shine and every part is a gem to play. All funny in their own right\, all with their own beliefs to defend\, each one is an integral part of the puzzle…what is The Real Thing…? \nCharacters\n\nHenry (35-40ish\, male) – quick-witted playwright. Sure of self and views\, will speak his mind. Banterous. Can take care of himself. A romantic. Married to Charlotte\, father to Debbie\, has an affair with Annie. Must be ok with kissing and romantic physical contact. This part has a significant number of lines to learn and is a great opportunity for an actor looking to take on a large\, leading role. \n\n\nAnnie (25-30ish\, female) – bright-eyed\, vivacious actress. Cheeky\, sensual and provocative. Activist. Motivated\, independent\, driven by morals and emotions. Must be ok with kissing and romantic physical contact. This part has a significant number of lines to learn and is a great opportunity for an actor looking to take on a large\, leading role.\n\n\nCharlotte (35-40ish\, female) – friendly but sharp; actress. A mix of Annie and Henry – was like Annie in the past but life has made her wiser; able to take care of herself and independent; an equal match for Henry’s wit and banter. Can be dry and ruthless. Can be soft and vulnerable. A force to be reckoned with but you would want her as a friend. Married to Henry\, mother to Debbie. Has had a few secret affairs.\n\n\nMax (35-40ish\, male) – kind and friendly\, keeps the peace\, wears his heart on sleeve. Actor. Married to Annie. \n\n\nBilly (22ish\, male/female\, certain lines Scottish accent) – young\, cheeky actor with little inhibition. Must be ok with kissing and romantic physical contact. \n\n\nDebbie (17\, female) – just finished school and is off travelling. Liberal and open attitude on sex\, love and life. Affectionately cuts through Henry’s wit and makes him question his views with her new generation of thinking. Independent and intelligent; energetic and defiant. Please note: this character only appears in one scene so would be perfect for an actor looking for a small but significant part.\n\n\nBrodie (25\, male/female\, Scottish accent) – soldier in the army who has been in prison for 3 years. Against everything\, wanting to cause an uprising against all the powers that control them. Not intelligent but forceful and driven in their own beliefs. Loud and unlikable and intimidating in some way (doesn’t have to be physical\, just the way they talk) but covering up a vulnerability. Self-congratulating and an aversion to saying ‘thank you’. Please note: this character only appears in one scene so would be perfect for an actor looking for a small but significant part.\n\nNB// All kissing and contact will be choreographed and planned in a controlled environment using Intimacy Coordination. \nUnless specified in the character breakdowns above\, please use your own accent. \nAbout the director\nJacob Ward has studied acting\, and been an actor and director for over 10 years. He hopes to use this opportunity to develop his idea of directing from an actor’s point of view\, giving each actor source material from which they will be able to build from. Various acting tools will be used/taught during rehearsals. Direction will be fast-paced and interactive\, and so he hopes then that this will be fun for all\, but also an exciting opportunity for those interested in learning more or for actors practising their craft. \nAudition information\nAuditions will take place at Southlands Methodist Church on: \n\nThursday 1 Dec: 7pm – 9.30pm\nSaturday 3 Dec: 2pm – 5.30pm\nSunday 4 Dec: 2pm – 5.30pm\n\nYou do not need to prepare a monologue. We’ll ask you to perform a duologue from the play with a partner\, which will be supplied in advance. Please prepare this scene as best you can; there is no need to learn the material off by heart but be as familiar with the text as you can  to allow you more freedom during the audition. The audition time slots will be half an hour long. \nTo register your interest\, please email yorksettlementcommunityplayers@gmail.com with your name\, which part/parts you are interested in\, a brief overview of your previous acting experience\, and any commitments that would make you unavailable during the rehearsal and performance times (see below for more details). SUMMARY:Auditions: Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce that our autumn production at Theatre@41 will be the hit Broadway comedy\, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang\, directed by Jim Paterson. \nPlaying with classic Chekhovian situations\, but taking them in hilarious new directions that anyone can enjoy\, the play tells the story of Vanya and Sonia\, who live a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up. But their peace is shattered when their movie star sister Masha returns unannounced with her twentysomething toyboy Spike. A weekend of rivalry\, regret and raucousness begins… \nThis is a brilliantly funny play\, with six very different roles that are a treat for comic actors who enjoy scratching past the surface to find the sadness underneath – offering the opportunity for “comic acting raised to the level of high art” (New York Times). \nCHARACTERS\n\nVanya (M\, 50s) – Resigned to his life\, more or less\, at least compared to Sonia\nSonia (F\, early 50s) – Vanya’s adopted sister who lives with him. Discontented\, upset\, regretful\nMasha (F\, 50s) – Their sister. Glamorous and successful globetrotting actress\nSpike (M\, 20s) – Aspiring actor\, sexy\, self-absorbed. Masha’s new companion. NB – Actor playing Spike needs to be physically fit and comfortable being in their underwear on stage\nNina (F\, early 20s) – Lovely\, sincere\, would-be actress. Starstruck and energetic\nCassandra (F\, any age) – Cleaning lady and soothsayer. Odd\, very odd\n\nAUDITION INFO\nAuditions will take place at Southlands Methodist Church on: \n\nThursday 14 July (7.30pm – 9.30pm)\nSunday 17 July (1pm – 4pm)\nTuesday 19 July (7pm – 9.30pm)\n\nYou do not need to prepare a monologue. We’ll ask you to perform an extract from the play with a partner\, which will be supplied in advance. The play is set in Pennsylvania and you will need to be able to perform (or have ability to learn) a decent American accent. We will provide you with a half hour audition time slot. \nTo register your interest\, please email yorksettlementcommunityplayers@gmail.com with your name\, which part you are interested in\, a brief overview of your previous acting experience\, and any commitments that would make you unavailable during the rehearsal and performance times (see below for more details). Please also specify if you are unable to make any of the audition dates. \nOTHER IMPORTANT INFO\nRehearsals will run from Sunday 4 September\, an average of twice during weekday evenings and one daytime on the weekend. Production week is w/c 31 October\, with four performances from 3-5 November. You will need to join York Settlement Community Players in order to be part of the cast. \nWe can’t wait to hear from you!
