Directing Workshop with Bridget Foreman

Building on her previous workshops with YSCP, director and writer, Bridget Foreman, will guide you through the process of directing a short 30 minute play by a contemporary playwright. Participants will be asked to think in advance about approaches to staging and conceptualising a really exciting and challenging text – key skills for a director, which we will explore in the workshop. Suitable for people with all levels of experience as we will all learn together.

About Bridget
Bridget has directed plays, including classics, new writing and devised work for the National Youth Theatre, the Manchester Youth Theatre, Riding Lights Theatre Company and Sixth Sense, as well as working for several years as a workshop director for Pilot Theatre. Her productions have been staged in venues as diverse a the Lowry, Friargate Theatre, the Studio at Manchester Royal Exchange, The Bristol Old Vic and numerous schools and village halls. She directed Lucy Kirkwood’s Maryland at Frigate Theatre in 2021 and her most recent work as a writer is My Place, which toured UK venues in 2022. She is currently under commission to York Theatre Royal for The Bare Bones, a new play to be produced in 2024 and is also working on a libretto for a new opera. In addition to writing and directing, Bridget is a Lecturer in Playwriting at the University of York.
Why directing?
At YSCP, we’re well on the way with planning for Direct Approach 2023, which offers an opportunity for first time directors to stage a short play in an informal setting. We’ve received some excellent scripts and, although this workshop is not focused on Direct Approach, it will be very useful for anyone who might want to get involved.
