Auditions for Blue Remembered Hills are this week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday

Our first major production of 2026 will be Blue Remembered Hills by Dennis Potter directed by Fleur Hebditch. The play will be performed at York Theatre Royal Studio, for 11 performances, including two Saturday matinees, from Tuesday 18 to Saturday 28 February 2026.

Blue Remembered Hills takes us back to a summer afternoon in 1943, where we find a group of children playing, fantasising and mimicking the adult world. We see their innocence and we see their cruelty as the play leads us through their laughter and nostalgia into darker territory.

Roles:

All seven characters are children aged 7 and are played by adults of any age.

Angela: Pretty and knows it, the popular one, the more dominant of the two girls.
Audrey: Plain with glasses, looks for alliances but is not scared to stand up for herself.
Peter: Bit of a bully, starts fights easily, thinks of himself as top dog in this group of friends.
Donald Duck: a troubled child, that is beaten at home, the others pick on him. He is unstable.
Willie: Energetic, enthusiastic, friendly.
Raymond: Has a stutter, dressed as a cowboy. He is sensitive but he does have the coveted knife!
John: Will stand up for himself and others, has a sense of right and wrong.

We may look at casting a female identifying person in one of the boy character roles.

Auditions will be in groups, and will last approximately an hour. Half an hour will be a workshop around physicality. Be prepared to improvise, but this won’t be anything too scary. In the second half of the audition we will look at two scenes. You do not need to learn anything. The scene scripts will be sent to you. Do familiarise yourself with the scenes and bring your best Yorkshire accent and/or West Country accent if you can do one.

If you are interested in playing Donald Duck there will be 5 minutes at the end of the audition to chat with the director – you don’t need to prepare anything.

Recall auditions (if needed) will be on Thursday 27th November 2025.

If you are cast, a readthrough and some individual character work will take place in December 2025. It’s possible there will be an odd group rehearsal or two if we can make it work. Rehearsals will start in earnest in early January 2026: two weekday evenings and one daytime rehearsal at the weekend. As this is an ensemble piece, and due to the nature of the play, we anticipate that everyone will need to attend all rehearsals, so please do ensure you have that level of availability before committing.
