About Us

Bringing theatre and communities together since 1919

YSCP (York Settlement Community Players) was established over a century ago. We’ve been producing both modern and classic plays in traditional theatre spaces and not-so traditional venues across York ever since. In the 1950s, a local schoolgirl named Judi Dench became a member of YSCP and performed with the company before heading off to drama school.

As well as putting on at least two productions a year at the York Theatre Royal Studio and Theatre@41, we also hold occasional talks, workshops and more.

Our Direct Approach project is a regular opportunity for aspiring directors to direct new plays in a room in a pub in the city.

Unsettled, our very own improv group, meets on the first Thursday of the month at Southlands Methodist Church to work on their improv skills. They’ve been going for two years with support from mentor Paul Birch and are looking to put on their first improv night this summer in front of an audience.

We also host regular monthly playreadings in The Royal Oak, Goodramgate.

Interested in joining our inclusive community group? We always welcome new members, whether you are new to theatre or a seasoned professional; our opportunities are open to all. Being a member of YSCP provides you with the opportunity to gain experience of many vital roles in a theatre company, including: acting, directing, stage management, backstage crew, promotion, fundraising and front of house.
