John Cooper Studio at 41 Monkgate, 11 – 14 November
We’re so excited to be back presenting live theatre in York this November with riotous comedy, The 39 Steps.
A West End hit, The 39 Steps is a two-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning comedy thriller where over 150 zany characters recreate the story of Richard Hannay, a man with a boring life, who meets a woman with a thick accent who says she’s a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps” is hot on the man’s trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale.
Our last live theatre production was Chekhov’s The Seagull at York Theatre Royal Studio in March 2020, which closed a week before the theatre shut due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since then, we’ve hosted play readings and social meet-ups online.
The 39 Steps is directed by Harri Marshall, who directed YSCP’s The Red Shoes in 2019, also at 41 Monkgate.
Harri said: “For the last eighteen months, the UK feels like it’s lost its theatrical mojo, which is why I am excited to bring this light, wickedly funny play to Theatre@41 to share in the love, laughter and to showcase some brilliantly inventive theatre.
“Rehearsals are going very well, we started at the deep end plunging into the logistics of how to recreate those fabulous iconic scenes that make The 39 Steps famous when it debuted on the West End. This includes recreating chase sequences on board the Flying Scotsman and a live on-stage plane crash! I am very lucky to be working with such a talent cast. Every single performer is a brilliant star in their own right. Their collective repertoire includes credits at the London Coliseum, York Theatre Royal, York Light Opera, the York Mystery Plays, Pick Me Up Theatre and previous successful York Settlement Community Player Shows such as The Cherry Orchard and The Red Shoes.”
The cast includes Aran MacRae (Richard Hannay), recently seen as a sonneteer in York Shakespeare Project’s Sonnets at the Bar, and Sanna Buck (Annabella Schmidt/Pamela/Margaret). Stephen Wright, Andrew Isherwood, Jim Paterson, Matt Pattison, Matt Lomax and Dan Boyle play The Clowns.
