We’re looking ahead to our Easter 2023 production in the York Theatre Royal Studio and are accepting proposals from directors. Our slot at the theatre is 3 – 15 April (7/8 performances due to Easter weekend closure of the theatre). This is a great opportunity to direct on a professional stage.

What are we looking for?

  • A full-length play with a well-known title or playwright (see below a list of past YSCP productions in the YTR Studio for an idea of what we’re looking for)
  • A cast of 6-12 with a good gender and age balance
  • Simple set (please note: there is limited backstage space in the Studio)

Past YSCP productions in the Studio:

  • Woman in Mind, Alan Ayckbourn (2022)
  • The Seagull, Anton Chekhov (2020)
  • The Duchess of Malfi, John Webster (2019)
  • Uncle Vanya, Anton Chekhov (2018)
  •  Blue Stockings, Jessica Swale (2017)
  • The Rivals, Richard Sheridan (2016)

Keen to direct but don’t have a play in mind? The YSCP committee have shortlisted two potential plays for this slot that we think will work well: Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing and Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall’s Billy Liar. You can either pitch to direct one of these plays, or propose your own choice! Please submit your pitch (on one side of A4 together with details of any directing experience) by midnight on Friday 30 September and send it to yorksettlementcommunityplayers@gmail.com.

Directors will be supported by the YSCP committee throughout. Please note: this is an unpaid role. You are expected to rehearse on two weekday evenings and one weekend afternoon a week in York for a period of at least 8 weeks.

A YSCP panel will be talking to prospective directors soon after the closing date. Any questions, please don’t hesitate to drop us an email. We can’t wait to hear from you!
